clinical will service

A clinical will is a set of instructions that is provided to a 'trustee' to action should anything unexpected happen to the healthcare professional such as death or serious illness. These instructions typically outline the patients that the trustee should contact on behalf of the healthcare professional & the actions they should follow when communicating with these patients.

If you are working as a lone private healthcare practitioner then implementing a clinical will provides a formal channel that, in the event of any unforeseen circumstances occurring that would render you incapacitated or unable to contact your patients, ensures your patients will be notified in a supportive & safe format.

Actions that trustees may undertake include:

  • Holding a copy of the healthcare professionals patient or client list

  • Contacting active clients to advise them of the healthcare professionals circumstances

  • Distributing pre-written letters or documents to facilitate closure & signposting

  • Providing a de-briefing session or space to patients or clients if needed

  • Advising & liaising with key organisations e.g. professional bodies

  • Appropriate storage & destruction of client data, in line with the data protection act

The instructions of a clinical will are typically actioned following:

  • A period of significant ill health (e.g. following a stroke or extended hospital stay)

  • The death of the healthcare professional

  • The suspension of a healthcare professional
